Built 1147, was originally a Romanesque sanctuary. It was destroyed by fire in 1258 and damaged during the Turkish siege .
1359 Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg ordered the complete reconstruction of the church in Gothic style. Nowadays in this Cathedral Mass is read seven times on weekdays and ten times on sundays. Some services are broadcasted, especially weddings and funerals of prominent persons of public interest.
On these occasions the famous bell called Pummerin is ringing - like on New Year´s Eve.
Saint Stephen´s Cathedral is the topic of many books. It is one of the most famous Viennese sights and it was uncontested as highest building in Europe for a long time- measuring almost 137 m.
Inside the Cathedral there are many art treasures like the tomb of Prince Eugene of Savoy , the altarpiece of Wiener Neustadt, the pulpit constucted by Anton Pilgram, the sepulcher of Emperor Frederik III , the watchman`s lookout, a self portrait of the sculptor, and the Gothic altar.
In the last days of World War II the cathedral was seriously damaged by fire. The reconstruction was finished within seven years only. One of the most famous landmarks of Vienna was celebrating its resurrection.To keep this treasure for the next generations it is necessary to submit it to permanent renovation.
With more than two millions of visitors a year the Cathedral is number one on the hitlist of Vienna´s most beautiful sights.
