Vienna State Opera House

The Vienna State Opera House

The Vienna State Opera House was opened on the 25th of May 1869 with a gala performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Planned by the architects Eduard van der Nüll (1812-1868) and August Sicard von Sicardsburg (1813-1868), it is one of the premier venues in the world.

This opera house offers room for 2276 spectators and it's stage is one of the largest in Europe. It was the first building erected on the Ringstraße when the old city's fortifications were torn down.
The directorship of the opera is considered one of the most important positions in Austria. Great musicians have held it, among them Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss. Once a year, the stage and the orchestra stalls of the Vienna State Opera turn into a giant dance floor – for the famous Vienna Opera Ball.
